300mm Fab Capacity to Double
SEMI(R) has found that despite the steep pricing declines experienced by memory, device manufacturers continue to invest significantly in additional 300mm fab capacity. In total, worldwide 300mm capacity will double from the beginning of 2007 by the end of 2008 as 25 new 300mm high-volume fabs come online. By the end of 2008, only 73 -300mm fabs will provide over 6.2 million wafers per month.

Texas Instruments OPA369 Zero-Crossover Op Amp
Texas Instruments Incorporated’s (TI) (NYSE: TXN) OPA369 is the industry’s lowest power zero-crossover operational amplifier (op amp). The OPA369 features a unique single-input-stage architecture and achieves rail-to-rail performance without input crossover to solve the common design problem of input offset distortion due to the change in common mode voltage that is very prominent in low-voltage, rail-to-rail applications. Combined with 1uA quiescent current, SC70 package and operation down to 1.8V, the OPA369 simplifies high-performance designs in battery-powered, portable products.

In-Stat believes the ultra mobile device market is evolving to become a family of devices that will compose the “ultra mobile device (UMD) paradigm.” According to the research firm, one ultra mobile device will not be able to meet all of the different UMD usages/applications.

Semtech SX1211 UHF RF Transceiver
Semtech’s (Nasdaq:SMTC) SX1211 is a UHF radio frequency (RF) transceiver with the industry’s lowest receiver (RX) current consumption (<3mA), significantly increasing battery life in wireless sensor network applications. The SX1211 is optimized for asynchronous sensor network designs in the unlicensed industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) frequency bands (868-870 MHz and 902-928 MHz) where low RX power consumption is critical to battery life as the receiver is constantly waking up to sniff for signals.

According to In-Stat, the peak year for IEEE 1394 devices is expected to be 2008, and a slow decline will set in beginning in 2009. IEEE 1394 is the second-choice technology in many product segments and it’s one-third penetration of the PC market is small compared to high-speed USB’s 100% penetration. IEEE 1394 (1394), also called FireWire or i.Link, is a high-speed serial bus specification found primarily in three markets: PCs, PC peripherals, and Consumer Electronics.
